Shedding hair inside the house

Whether with man’s best friend or your pussy cat, cuddling up on the couch with a pet is always fun.

But the hair they leave behind? Not so much.

There are a few simple tips to help reduce hair in the house. Some involve treating the pet. Others involve finding easy ways to clean up after them.

Depending on how furry your pet is, brush it regularly. This may be daily for some, but weekly might be enough for others. When moving from winter to spring, the animal is probably going to shed its winter coat so you’ll need to be more vigilant.

In extreme cases, it may be worth paying for a professional dog groomer. They will remove a lot of dead hair, making it easier to maintain the animal at home.

In some cases, the hair shedding might be a sign of illness such as mange. If there are bald patches appearing or the shedding seems heavier than usual, it may be time to see your vet.

Tips and tools

Pet stores and vet practices carry a huge range of tools for grooming your pet.

Lint-rollers are a good tool. They can actually be used on the pet in between brushings, as well as on the sofa or rug. If you keep one handy for yourself, you can tidy up clothes before you leave the house, if this is an issue.

In an emergency, wrap packing or duct tape around your hand, sticky side facing out, and pat this over the furniture, cushions or car seats.

Rubber gloves can also be used to pick hair off the sofa. Pop them on, dampen them and use short scraping strokes over the hairy furniture.

A soft bristle brush, run over furniture and soft furnishings, also works well. Brush the area in small circles and remove offending hair from the bristles regularly.

For carpets and rugs, keep your vacuum head setting on that used for hard floors. This helps it dig in and lift the hair out. It gives you a better workout too. You can even vacuum your pet – carefully! Use the small brush and be very gentle.

And if you really need help, there is a Dyson vacuum cleaner designed especially to remove pet hair from the home.
